23 Things - Thing 2 second part

Reflecting back on my initial thoughts about Web 2.0 I would have to look back a couple of years but my reaction would be the same as now - cool - I can play with this stuff for HOURS! Now I'm in this class I can even say I'm doing class work - how cool is that. Some of the 2.0 tools have made improvements that make them more user friendly for schools, while at the same time education has been taking steps towards utilizing the tools. If school technology will allow 2.0 offers us some opportunities to help students learn and create ways to utilize technology to encourage life long learning skills. The creative aspects along with the collaboration potential give educators a whole new tool box to help reach all learners.

Hi, I am Kax, a middle school tech teacher in 23 things with you. I am under Concrete Classroom. I wanted to ask you about your comment "if school technology will allow"----Does your district block all blogs making these tools very difficult to use at school?

Ours does and even though I am just starting this class, I am frustrated by the hyper-security that limits so much of the possibilities of the web and Web 2.0.

Kax, yes our tech department can make it very difficult to accomplish new things with technology. Now they have installed thin clients in the library and the thin clients can't handle a lot of activities that I would like to do. They can't handle the web page program we use, video editing, google earth, photostory and that's only the list of items I have checked on so far. The tech department does have a huge job but I sometimes feel there is a conflict between what tech department and classroom use.

I responded to your comment about the comic strip here and on my blog. http://concretekax.blogspot.com/2008/12/thing5.html?showComment=1230123420000#c3779552027388552954

This comic strip is pretty rudimentary. Another site http://www.comicstripgenerator.com/ has a searchable database of famous cartoons and people. They are only one window that you can add a caption to.

Warning: the bottom has a chat feature full of innappropriate webcam invitations. I am hoping that my district blocks the chat feature but not the site:)

I have found the real road block is district policy. And this is the reason I am on the district tech team. I have been pushing them based on creating a required computer class using the state tech standards. The state standards have force the issue, we just need to be proactive and inform the people in charge of policy.
Good luck.
